Financial Independence Calculator: FIRE Number Checklist
Financial Independence Calculator: FIRE Number Checklist
Financial independence is not only about saving harder. A useful FIRE plan needs a target number, a realistic savings rate, low-cost investing, risk controls and a life you can actually tolerate while building wealth.
Quick FIRE formula
Start with annual spending, not income. A simple first estimate is:
target portfolio = annual spending x 25
This is only a rough planning number. It does not replace tax planning, health insurance, inflation, family needs, market sequence risk or professional advice.
Practical checklist
| Step | What to calculate |
|---|---|
| Annual spending | Housing, food, insurance, transport, taxes, travel |
| Savings rate | Monthly investing divided by take-home income |
| Investment costs | ETF expense ratios, trading fees, tax drag |
| Emergency fund | Months of expenses held outside the market |
| Withdrawal plan | Conservative rate, cash buffer and bad-market plan |
| Burnout check | Whether the plan damages health, relationships or job performance |
Better sources than personal finance anecdotes
Use official investor education and established planning tools for the mechanics. The SEC explains mutual funds and ETFs, Investor.gov covers investing basics, and Fidelity provides retirement planning calculators. Those are stronger references than a viral story about extreme saving.

Extreme saving risk
Saving 50%-70% of income can accelerate FIRE, but it can also hide problems: under-eating, social isolation, poor sleep, delayed medical care, or taking too much market risk to hit an arbitrary date. If the plan only works when life is miserable, the plan is fragile.
Action plan
- Write current annual spending.
- Estimate the FIRE number using annual spending x 25.
- Compare ETF costs before choosing funds.
- Keep an emergency fund separate from investments.
- Review the plan every 6 months instead of reacting to market headlines.
